Changing Perspectives, Building Understanding: XREye at the FSW Bildungszentrum Open Day

At this year’s FSW Bildungszentrum Open Day, we had the opportunity to introduce XREye to nursing students, educators, healthcare professionals, and members of the public interested in the future of healthcare education. While the technology itself attracted considerable attention, the true focus of the day was a much more important question:

How can healthcare professionals better understand the everyday experiences of people living with vision impairments?

Through XREye’s immersive XR simulations, visitors were able to experience firsthand how different vision impairments can affect orientation, mobility, communication, and everyday activities. By stepping into the shoes of someone with reduced vision, participants gained insights that go far beyond what can be learned from textbooks or lectures alone.

Learning Through Experience

One of the most rewarding aspects of the event was witnessing the many “aha moments” throughout the day.

Visitors repeatedly expressed how eye-opening the experience was. Tasks that might seem simple at first glance, like finding your way out of a building, reading a newspaper or a medicine packaging to make sure you are not mixing up your heart medication with some pain killers, suddenly became challenging, highlighting the obstacles that people with vision impairments may face every day.

These firsthand experiences demonstrate the value of immersive learning. By experiencing these challenges themselves, healthcare professionals can develop a deeper understanding of their patients’ needs, identify situations where support is most needed, and provide assistance in a more effective, respectful, and person-centered way.

Thank You for an Inspiring Day

We would like to sincerely thank the entire team at the FSW Bildungszentrum for the invitation, the warm welcome, and the excellent organization of the event.

Most importantly, we would like to thank everyone who visited our booth, tried the simulation, shared their thoughts, and engaged in inspiring conversations.

The many positive reactions and valuable exchanges reinforced our belief in the power of immersive technology to foster understanding, empathy, and more inclusive care.

We look forward to continuing this journey and creating more opportunities for healthcare professionals to experience the world through the eyes of those they support.
